R.I.P. Bill Millin - The Normandy Invasion 'Mad' Bagpiper

On June 6, 1944 as British, Canadian and American troops launched their invasion of Nazi occupied France at Normandy, Scottish bagpiper Bill Millin marched up and down, back and forth on the beach, dodging bullets and trying to inspire the troops all the while playing his bagpipe as his comrades fell around him on Sword Beach. German snipers claimed they did not shoot him because they thought he was crazy.

He never rose above the rank of private and received no medal or commendation. Years after the war, his bravery was featured in a segment of the movie 'The Longest Day'. He was a living legend. He died on August 17, 2010 with almost no media attention.
