Stephen Harper's Undemocratic Approach To Governing

"As the Prime Minister of a long-established, if complacent, democracy, Stephen Harper is supposed to say that for him the will of the people is paramount. He is supposed to declare that whatever House of Commons Canadians establish through their votes, he will accept it and work with it. He is supposed to say that he is the servant of the people.

Remarkably, Harper says none of these things. He insists that the only House of Commons he can work with after the election is one in which his party has a majority of seats. Should his party end up with the largest number of seats in a minority Parliament, he has declared that he cannot work with the other parties.

He will not alter a single jot or tittle in the budget he presented in March in a bid to win the support of one or more of the opposition parties. Quite simply, he does not recognize the legitimacy of the members of the other parties in the House of Commons, even though their presence in the House is the result of the expression of the will of the people. He is not required, he is saying, to heed the voices, the wisdom or the ideas of other Parliamentarians.

Not only does Stephen Harper refuse to acknowledge the will of the people and the legitimacy of parties that are not his own, he calls into question the essential principle of the Westminster system of parliamentary government. The principle is that a ministry must enjoy the confidence of the majority of the members of the House of Commons. Furthermore, if one ministry does not enjoy the confidence of the House, it is appropriate for the Governor General to seek to form an alternative ministry that does enjoy the confidence of the House.

"At a rally later in Brampton – attended also by Ontario Progressive Conservative leader Tim Hudak and Toronto mayor Rob Ford – Harper thanked Ford for his support and for cleaning up the mess left behind by Jack Layton on Toronto City Council (never mind how many years that Layton has not been on council), and then had the crowd applaud the royal newlyweds. He then began his pitch for a majority government, but changed his target, saying it was now a choice between a Conservative government or an NDP government, and a vote for the Liberals is a vote for an NDP government. He then went on a rant about tax increases, occasionally changing his attack between the Liberals or the NDP (possibly a cut-and-paste error), and closed off with his usual “trouble lapping at our shores,” appealing to patriotism, and plea for his majority."

US President Barack Obama's birth certificate that was released by the White House in Washington. The White House on Wednesday released a longer version of President Barack Obama's US birth certificate to try to quiet a debate within Republican circles that he was not born in the United States.

WASHINGTON: The White House on Wednesday released a longer version of President Barack Obama’s US birth certificate to try to quiet charges from some Republicans that he was not born in the United States.
Obama was to make a White House statement at 1445 GMT about the controversy. Questions about his birth have been pushed in recent weeks by real estate tycoon Donald Trump, who says he is considering a run for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.
The new document confirms what a shorter version has said, that Obama was born in Hawaii on Aug 4, 1961, but provides a little more information, such as that he was born at Kapiolani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital.
The document was obtained by Obama’s personal lawyer, who traveled to Hawaii to retrieve a copy and returned with it on Tuesday.
“The president believed the distraction over his birth certificate wasn’t good for the country. It may have been good politics and good TV, but it was bad for the American people and distracting from the many challenges we face as a country,” said White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer.
Trump, speaking in New Hampshire, told reporters that he was “really happy” that this has taken place and ready to debate other issues.
“I feel I’ve accomplished something really, really important and I’m honored by it,” Trump said in remarks shown live on CNN.

"NIAGARA FALLS—Stephen Harper's Conservatives must win 23 more seats in Ontario to achieve their coveted majority, a task that senior party insiders now admit is almost impossible, the Star has learned.

High-ranking sources confide that even with the collapse of Michael Ignatieff's Liberals — and NDP Leader Jack Layton's surge, which helps split the vote in many Ontario ridings — it will be very difficult to make such immense gains in Canada's most populous province.

At the dissolution of Parliament, the minority Tories held 51 of Ontario's 106 federal seats.

Party sources say the possible loss of several British Columbia ridings to the New Democrats — and others in Quebec, where Layton is surfing an orange wave — has forced them to revise their projections.

As of Thursday, they said they needed to win at least 74 seats in Ontario to achieve a majority.

“It all comes down to Ontario and we're just not there,” a source said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the party's internal polling is closely guarded.

Another source confirmed the Tories' data echoes publicly available polls, such as Wednesday's Toronto Star-Angus Reid survey showing the Conservatives at 35 per cent, the New Democrats at 30 per cent and the Liberals at 22 per cent.

Nationwide, the governing party has 143 seats with two vacancies previously held by Conservatives. They must win 155 of Canada's 308 ridings for the majority that Harper insists is vital for economic stability."

Harper is talking (not favourably) about the possibility of a Jack Layton victory on Monday. For Harper to even acknowledge the possiblity of losing the government benches says very clearly that he is worried.

And after the slur and slander that Conservatives have bombed Mr. Ignatieff with in ongoing attack ads, it's pretty rich to see them asking Liberals if they aren't considering voting for Harper.

Federal Department Of Finance Report Shows NDP Has Best Balanced Budgets Record

The above chart shows the number of years that a balanced budget was achieved by provincial governments of various political stripes. It covers 23 fiscal year periods from the 1986-87 to 2008-09 across various administrations.

New Democratic provincial governments achieved the highest period with surplus budgets followed by Conservative administrations. Liberal provincial administrations had the worst record of deficit.

Don't let Conservatives or Liberals succeed in their scare tactics concerning New Democrats and their fiscal achievements.

Not this time! The vast majority of Western Canadian grain producers consistently elect pro-Canadian Wheat Board Delegates to the Board. If the majority of farmers hated the CWB they would elect delegates who would work with Harper to disband and destroy the grain marketing agency. But that's not the reality back home on the farm.

Favre was born in Gulfport, Mississippi on October 10, 1969 and grew up in nearby Kiln. He went on to play for Southern Mississippi, winning several key games including a famous upset of sixth-ranked Florida State on September 2, 1989. A July 1990 car crash nearly ended his life, but Favre trudged on after extensive intestinal surgery, winning an incredible comeback victory against Alabama less than two months later and graduating in 1991 with a degree in special education. His degree and extensive work with disadvantaged children was used as a plot point in his hilarious cameo in “There’s Something About Mary”, which saw Favre appear as Cameron Diaz’s secret ex-boyfriend.

Numerous clashes with coach Jerry Glanville combined with his poor performance led to a trade with the Packers, which unbeknownst to the Falcons jump-started the most phenomenal NFL career in recent memory. Favre’s turning point was a memorable 1992 game against the Cincinnati Bengals when he stepped in for QB Don Majkowski after the starter suffered an injury. Favre played poorly, leading fans to vocally demand that he be replaced by benched QB Ty Detmer, until Favre threw a commanding comeback touchdown in the game’s final seconds which won the Packers the game. Since then, Favre has started every Packers game for 14 years, a record streak of 244 games.

Called the ‘Iron Man of the NFL’, Favre has led the Packers since 1992 and has been pivotal in making the team a bona fide football dynasty. In 1997 the Packers handily defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI, and advanced to the Bowl in 1998 as well, losing to the Denver Broncos. Favre holds a smattering of career records, including most seasons with 30 or more touchdown passes, most consecutive seasons with 3,000+ passing yards, and most NFL MVP awards. The 37 year-old QB will likely pass Dan Marino’s record of 420 career passing touchdowns before he retires. Truly the stuff that sports legends are made of, Favre’s era of dominance has been one of the most exciting in NFL history.

Alberta's Conservative Government Takes In More Revenue From Casinos Than From Entire Oilsands Industry!

Here's an example of Conservative priorities - both in the Tory Motherland of Alberta and in the PMO in Ottawa. Stephen Harper's government gives billions in tax cuts and taxpayer funded subsidies to the Oil Industry in Canada. As a nation, we seem to bow and scrape to ensure that the fortunes of large oil companies (and large banks) are highly profitable. Apparently, working Canadians are somehow supposed to benefit from national Corporate Welfare. I paid $1.26 a litre today for some gasoline. Enough is enough!

Oilsands revenue is expected to drop to about $1 billion this year because of the global recession, but gambling revenue will remain steady at about $1.5 billion, according to the forecasts.
