"On March 25, the very day the government fell on a confidence motion in the House of Commons, Mr. Clement (Parry Sound-Muskoka, Ont.), Industry minister at the time and also in charge of the government’s Northern Ontario Development Program (FedNor), distributed a staggering $10-million in federal assistance to six electoral districts in the region covered by the program, including $1.9-million in his own cottage-country riding on Georgian Bay, controversial site of the G8 summit last year.
Informed of the pre-election spending, opposition MPs are furious that Prime Minister Stephen Harper (Calgary Southwest, Alta.) not only designated Mr. Clement Treasury Board President and tasked him with massive spending cuts—while Parliament awaits a potentially scathing report on $47-million he authorized for questionable spending on the meeting of G8 leaders — but also made him a minister of state with continued responsibility for northern Ontario development spending."
