Another E. coli outbreak: 1 million pounds of beef recalled

On Friday, Valley Meat Company of Modesto California recalled over 1 million pounds of ground beef products after several people were affected by E. coli contamination.

The contaminated beef products were sold in Oregon, Texas, California, Arizona and internationally, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in a statement. The company has been working with the USDA to identify stores where the products were sold. The USDA claims the list should be available in three to 10 working days.

It is the first recall in the history of the Valley Meat Company. The recalled products have the code "EST. 8268" inside the label's USDA mark of inspection. Any meat product containing the code should be discarded immediately.

The USDA claims at least seven California residents were sickened between February and June with E. coli contamination. Meat collected from one of the patient's freezers confirmed the source of the outbreak.

Lab testing confirmed the bacteria as E. coli O157:H7, the strain most commonly connected to food poisoning.

E. coli is a potentially deadly germ which causes bloody diarrhea, dehydration and, in severe cases, kidney failure. E. coli can be killed by cooking meat products to an internal temperature of 160 degrees.

There have been multiple recalls of meat in 2010. In February, Huntington Meat Packing Inc. recalled almost 5 million pounds of tainted meat products. Last month, Rocky Mountain Natural Meats recalled over 50,000 pounds of Bison meat due to E. coli O157:H7. In April, WinCo Foods recalled ground beef sold from its 70 stores throughout the United States. The list goes on. Is the USDA doing its job?
