On Wednesday, the senate failed to pass a bill to reauthorize benefits for the unemployed. The bill was struck down by a vote of 58 to 38. More than 2 million Americans will be without unemployment checks in the weeks to come. The measure would have passed if the late senator Robert Byrd was in attendance. "We will vote on this measure again once there is a replacement named for the late Senator Byrd," Reid stated. This is the first time in history congress has cut unemployment benefits during such economic turmoil. Leaders on both sides expressed concerns in relation to the duration of benefits made available to the unemployed. Some members believe extended benefits discourages people from job hunting.
