Unemployment rates rose in 29 states this month according to a government report released Saturday.
The growing unemployment rate comes at a crucial time. As the President pointed out in his State of the Union message, a 1% jump in the unemployment rate raises the federal deficit by $25 billion because of lost taxes and additional unemployment benefits. For the first time in years, polls show that more Americans are worried about unemployment than inflation. As it stands, the nations unemployment rate is over 10%. It is the highest that this rate has been since April 1983 and according to the Dept. of Labor there were over 190,000 job losses in October.
